Antonio SAURA

Antonio Saura (Huesca, 1930 - Cuenca, 1998), a Spanish painter, writer, and illustrator considered one of the leading figures of abstract expressionism in Spain.
In 1957, he became the main theorist of informalism in Spain with the founding of the El Paso Group, beginning a new chapter in Spanish art after two decades of creative silence. His style is defined as monochrome, using only black, or almost monochrome, introducing browns and grays. Fleeing formal abstraction, Saura became a powerful expressionist, disdaining traditional forms of representation.
"The canvas is an endless battlefield."
