ARMAN Fernandez
Armand Pierre Fernández (Nice, 1928 - New York, 2005) is an internationally recognized figure in abstract and conceptual art from the second half of the 20th century, and a founding member of Nouveau Réalisme. His sculptural and pictorial work, as well as his monumental public installations, should be understood as a coherent whole that questions the human condition through material objects.Objects, waste, and repetition are primary elements of his creation, acting as an x-ray of consumer society. In fact, Arman studied archaeology and art history, disciplines that sparked a deep curiosity in him for the material traces of humanity, Zen Buddhism, as well as classical music and Eastern philosophy, passions that accompanied him until the end of his life.
"I have never believed that quantity is the enemy of quality. For me, repetition is a way to discover the essence of the object; a single clock is a tool, but a thousand clocks are a reflection on time."
