Joan MIRÓ

Joan Miro

Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893-Palma de Mallorca, 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramist. His works reflected his interest in the subconscious and in the culture and traditions of Catalonia.

Miró was one of the pioneers of Surrealism, specifically its more "childlike" and automatic aspect. For Joan Miró, the subconscious was a vast playground, or a toy very similar to those he had in his childhood. His work gradually became more abstract, simpler, more childlike. He also reduced his palette to primary colors, to primary shapes, and this is also evident in his sculptures and ceramics.

"I always seek extreme simplicity."
