Rafael CANOGAR

Rafael Canogar (Toledo, 1935), painter, sculptor, and engraver, is one of the main representatives of abstract art in Spain. In 1957, he co-founded the Madrid-based group El Paso with other artists, actively defending informal aesthetics and openness to the international scene.
Throughout his career, Canogar has been in a constant process of change and renewal. From his critical figurative works, which followed his informalist period, to his return to abstraction, and from the more expressive forms of Informalism to the ordered and constructed structures of his later works, his painting has been driven by the idea of permanent renewal, always maintaining a personal imprint.
"There is nothing I hate more than repeating myself and academizing my language"
